This is an excerpt of a script I wrote as part of my wedding celebrant training, following a 20 minute interview with just one half of the couple featured. The couple's names have been changed.
Eve arrived at her local, Bart’s, and sought out her favourite chair at the bar, only to find someone was sat in it. That someone was Alex. Dressed in his standard uniform of a t-shirt and jeans, she was instantly annoyed by his choice of seat, but quite liked the look of him. Shy by nature, she decided not to approach him directly, but instead to order a glass of wine right next to him and ensure she looked outwardly disgruntled. Eventually, he took the bait, and asked her “Would you like to sit down?”.
Eve and Alex were a slow burn. They sat in the middle of a venn diagram of friendship groups, never meeting until that day at Bart’s. Eventually it transpired that Helen, who’s here today and knew them both first, had orchestrated the meeting. But at the end of that fun and friend-filled night, when Alex put Eve into a taxi, they were still a long way off becoming partners. A close and supportive friendship came first, with Alex often staying at Eve’s flat and the pair offering each other dating advice. Alex once even dragged Eve on a business trip to Turkey, roping her into helping him seal an important deal! Eventually, something clicked and Alex made a move. Having already shared close quarters and seen each other on bad days, they quickly became a solid team.
Today’s celebration looks very different from how Alex and Eve originally imagined their wedding. As many of you will know, since they first got engaged in 2018, Alex and Eve have sadly each lost both of their parents. Supporting each other through this immense period or mutual grief has bonded them even closer together. Eve saw Alex’s kindest qualities as she watched him be a devoted son.
They now find joy and contentment together through some of their old pastimes, bringing people together and throwing parties, and some new ones, like gardening at their new home in the Cotswolds. Alex keeps buying specialist power tools for the job, and Eve has to keep making room for them. Eve is the organiser and likes to plan, and Alex happily drives them wherever they need to be, stubbornly avoiding traffic of course. Eve helps Alex with presentations for work, he drags her away from it when she needs a break. They gently push and pull to get the best out of each other, and together become the heart of the party as soon as they arrive. Although this day is different to how originally imagined, it’s full of friends, wine and chaos, and that’s exactly how they wanted it.
